Another Quake, Magnitude 3.1, Rattles Mountains Near the Pass

A magnitude 3.1 temblor struck early Tuesday about 16 miles southwest of Palm Desert, making three quakes felt in Riverside County in less than 24 hours, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake was registered by USGS instruments at 1:21 a.m. Dec. 31 with an epicenter 12 miles east-southeast of Anza, 14 miles southwest of La Quinta, and 16 miles south-southwest of Palm Desert.

People reported feeling the temblor in communities including Palm Desert, Palm Springs, La Quinta, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Rancho Mirage and Mountain Center, according to the USGS.

On Monday Dec. 30, a magnitude 3.3 quake struck at 10:33 a.m. about 23 miles south of Palm Desert, and a magnitude 3.7 quake struck at 3:44 p.m. about two miles south of Idyllwild and Pine Cove, according to the USGS.

No injuries or damage were reported due to the temblors.
