Uwing, I too am glad you attended the meeting. For so long only a handful of citizens have beenRead Moreatte nding. I think if more people would make the effort to learn what's happening in our town we could all work together to make the best future possible for our families. I have to warn you it is hard to get a true picture of all the intricacies from 3 minute public comments. I want to challenge you, and anyone else interested, to meet me for coffee or a beer, my treat, to get my perspective on what's working and what's not and how I think we can move forward to build a better Beaumont. Anyone interested in taking this challenge, please email me at OurFocusOurKids@gmail.com. I would also be honored to come to your home to talk to you and your friends, I will even bring homemade refreshments from my wife Marti; she is a great cook. Uwing, I hope you will continue to come to council meetings, we really need all the help we can get. Thank you.

Cal Stops would be not completely stopping on a red-light turn, a generally harmless bending of the Read Morerules that costs a not-so-harmless $500 ticket. At four-way stops they also sit, looking for slow rollers. I'd rather they nailed speeders way over the limit and those flat blowing red-lights and stop signs, but there's probably not enough revenue in just popping the bad drivers, so we all have to watch it when the bikes are out.

While I would welcome thoseRead Morep ayments ending early, just how much are they going to have to increase to retire a 30 yr debt in only 3 years? 800%? 1500%? 3000%? WTF? No one could afford that! Bing shows one house facing Adams St. with a dry creek/ runoff directly behind it, so it could beRead Morege ologic, or bad compaction of the soil. If its on a concrete slab, repair would cost more than the houses value. If its wood floors than you've got footings of concrete and piers. These can be jacked up and repaired, especially if it's wood damage[termites or rot]. The owner should enlist engineering help if it's a soil problem. The best scenario is still expensive and likely not covered by any insurance, but I'd check that too. Summer, a front yard sinkhole could be the collapse of an old septic system, abandoned to the city's sewer system. In any case, a sinkhole in the pass would only result from a massive water leak underground and is very unlikely.

What's your point? Brown didn't create the emergency, the courts, and a hundred years of medicalRead Moreneg lect, did. Unfortunately, when the state takes control of a convict, they accept responsibility for the inmates health care, which, for like the rest of us, has gotten expensive, because deadly illnesses are becoming chronic, with new costly treatments, as one example. The state's solution was AB 109, to send their problems to the county or release them. The Gov's goofy spin on it doesn't make it all his fault, he's one part of many, but the bottom line is still the same, whatever the fix is, it will cost us, new jails, more jails, more money.

Jacinda, what makes a community tight is not the number of homes, but the people in them. Many ofRead Moreu s want to make Beaumont a better city by fixing our problems and moving ahead. It is that kind of positive thinking that helps make a community tight. You speak about how great Beaumont used to be. Well about 20 years ago, the city was so messed up that it very nearly was dissolved.
beaumontdave June 29, 2014 at 06:08 PM
Jacinda, you make valid points about the price of growth, though I think you over-state the damage. Read MoreWe still have corny little fairs and fests, I still see jackrabbits and coyotes from time to time. Our best defense against too much building is the topography, the national forest to the north, conservancy lands both ways, and Potrero being a preserve to the south. The sad truth is you can't stonewall growth, you can control it some, but you'd be losing lawsuits right and left telling owners they can't develop their property as zoned. Growth at the edge of a population center like Socal is inevitable, so all you can really do is slow it and steer it some, like stopping warehouses against the foothills in CV, for instance. I agree that having to drive to jobs is a fair trade-off for that small town feel, also requiring good housing and well paying jobs help the qualities of a town, since a bunch of low-income renters have no investment in their community, see Hemet, Moreno Valley, and San Bernardino. Growth is a big issue, but time will tell how Beaumont handles it. If you think the town's already "gone to hell" than your only real choice is to find someplace more isolated, less in the path of "progress".

Victor, while I do peruse the Patch a couple times a week, I seldom comment anymore. The site hasRead Morede volved into some sort of cross between the Enquirer and Myspace. Fantasy is presented as fact, honest debate is non existent, and any real logic or common sense is inevitably attacked with juvenile threats and character assassination. While there are a few people here who honestly want to make a positive difference in their cities, most here are unbalanced at best, just want attention, and will stoop to any level to get it. I'm reminded of a very appropriate quote: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt". Plenty of you all have in fact removed all doubt.
