Truck Driver Rolls Over 2-Year-Old Boy in Cherry Valley Boulevard Driveway

The boy sustained major injuries just before sundown Tuesday and he was transported to Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley, Cal Fire and CHP officials said.

A 2-year-old boy was run over by a Toyota truck in a residential driveway Tuesday evening in Cherry Valley and he was hospitalized with major injuries, Cal Fire and California Highway Patrol officials said.

The incident was reported about 5:15 p.m. in the 39000 block of Cherry Valley Boulevard, and firefighter-paramedics from Cal Fire-Cherry Valley Station 22 responded, Cheri Patterson of Cal Fire said in a phone interview.

A 17-year-old Beaumont resident, Mariah Smith, was driving a 2004 Toyota SR5 north on a residential driveway when a group of children approached the truck and she stopped, CHP Officer Darren Meyer said in a statement.

"Believing all the children were away from the vehicle, the driver began to pull into a parking area," Meyer said. "A two year old male approached the right front of the truck. The driver didn't see the child in front of the right front wheel. The Toyota's right front tire rolled over the child."

American Medical Response paramedics transported the child to Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley with major injuries, Meyer said.

The child is the nephew of the driver and he is a resident of the Twentynine Palms area, Meyer said.

Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the incident, Meyer said.

The incident was being investigated by CHP Officer Adrian Horta. Anyone with further information was urged to contact the San Gorgonio Pass CHP at (951) 769-2000.

This is just so horrible the child was too young to understand to watch out for cars and as for the driver it Is hard to see a child that small especially in a truck. I hope her nephew is ok and that she is fine too this must be something very hard to deal with my prayers are with their family

I feel so sorry for the driver and the child, but why in the world was a 2 yr old baby unsupervised? I hope the child will be OK; terrible thing to happen
