Get Out: Five Ideas for Your Weekend

Pound out beats, nail the audition and shake hands with local business owners this weekend.

This weekend speaks to something primal. It holds the eternal beat of the drum, the urge to create art, the natural instinct to gather together, the spirit of rising above what is savage, and even a wild animal or two.

Why Go: The Desert Film Society hosts this screening of this film based on a true story. It depicts a single dramatic day in the life of Anjelica Soto, aka “Rascal,” a 15-year old Latina gang leader in Watts, as she struggles to survive.  Surrounded by escalating violence and racial tensions, Rascal realizes her days in the gang are numbered. Encouraged by her English teacher to apply for a writing program in Iowa, Rascal hopes to use the material from her life to write her way out of Watts.

When/Where: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday at the Palm Springs Leisure Center, 401 S. Pavilion Way, Palm Springs

Why Go:  While you’re in Palm Springs, you might as well see a bunch of awesome cats. There will be more than 200 pedigreed and everyday cats and kittens to see at this show. Breeds include: Abyssinian, Somali, Burmese, Siamese, Cornish Rex, Persian, Ocicat, Maine Coon, Himalayan and many more. Vendors will be selling fun cat toys, treats and climbing gyms, too.
