Fired Banning Officer Comes Under Fire In New Position

Greg Herrington, one of three officers seeking damages from the city of Banning, is now the acting chief in McFarland in Kern County. His department is being accused of retaliating against a whistle blower.

A former Banning police officer who has accused the department of discrimination is now embroiled in a controversy in his new job.

Greg Herrington, fired by Banning in 2009, is now the acting police chief in the city of McFarland, in Kern County near Bakersfield. The city of McFarland is being sued by two men claiming the police department retaliated against them -- one of whom had applied for the chief's job -- for reporting Herrington and other officers' checkered job history to the city, according to reports from Bakersfield TV stations KBAK and KBFX.

The current lawsuit came about as Herrington and his department were the subject of an investigation by the television station, as he and three other officers on the McFarland police force had been fired from their previous police jobs. Herrington and two others had been Banning officers.
