Beaumont Sweeps Relays, Hosts Eighth Annual Track Invitational

Tricia Cervantes wins two events and helps out on two winning relay teams.

Beaumont High’s girl’s track team was in fine form during Saturday’s eighth annual Cougar Classic track and field Invitational.

The Cougars didn’t let a cold day slow them down. They swept the relays and won three other events on their home turf at San Gorgonio Middle School.

Tricia Cervantes and Jazmin Romero won two events each to lead the Cougars.

Cervantes ran a leg on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays and also placed first in the 300 hurdles. Cervantes settled for runner-up honors in the 100.

Romero won the 800 and 1600.

The Cougars were sharp in the relays. Cervantes ran the opening leg in both events.

“The girls really did well and kept with it,” Cervantes said of Beaumont’s run in the 4x100. “My start was good and I felt I got out fast. It was a good race for us.”

The 4x400 relay was close. Beaumont won with a 4:26.24. Palm Desert was second in 4:26.64.

“I was nervous because I saw that Palm Springs had some faster times than us,” Cervantes said. “But I had a feeling we would pull it out. We ran strong. Our anchor was phenomenal.”

Tara Trevino ran the last leg and nailed down the win.

“It (the meet) was very semi nerve racking because we never had competition like this,” said Trevino, who placed fifth in the 400. “It was good because it helped push us. That made us run better.”

Other top finishers: Baylee Williams ran a leg on the winning 4x100 and took second in the 100 (13.38); Alex Gozzip placed second in the 3200 and Joye DePalatis placed second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. And Zoe Pressly placed third in the 300 hurdles.

And the Cougars got a chance to see some league rivals in action.

“It makes us know where we stand,” Trevino said. “It helps us know who are competition is.”

Beaumont will likley be in the running for the league’s team title.

“They (other teams) have a lot of stamina,” Cervantes said. “Some of them will give us a run for our money. This was a good meet for us but I really think we could win a league title.”

In the boy’s meet, Beaumont had third place finishes by Andrew Walker (110 hurdles), Ryan Angel (400), Keanu Kisa (100) and Zakk Marquez (300 hurdles).
